An incisive, hilarious, and tender exploration of fatherhood, love, and family life through the story of a widower who attempts to become the father he didn’t know he could be.
This Was Not the Plan has received praise from the following literary trade publications:
“Alger’s (The Darlings) new novel of love, loss, and parenthood is readable and relatable…uplifting and memorable.” (Publishers Weekly)
“A breezy, uplifting read.” (Booklist)
And also these reviews from fellow authors:
“I love the writing of Cristina Alger. Her characters are complex and beautifully drawn. I lost myself in This Was Not the Plan.”—Elin Hilderbrand, author of The Rumor
“Note to reader: clear your schedule before you start this book, because you won’t be doing anything else till you finish it.” —Jeff Arch, screenwriter (“Sleepless in Seattle”)
“A funny, bittersweet, and ultimately uplifting look at parenthood through the eyes of a single father. You won’t just root for these characters—you’ll fall in love with them.”—Sarah Pekkanen, author of Things You Won’t Say
While all the above positive and lovely statements are true, Cristina has shared a much more personal insight into the novel through her post, Cristina Alger: Why I Write. Most novels featuring single parenthood do so through a mother’s perspective and situation, however This Was Not the Plan tells the story of Charlie Goldwyn — a loving parent — who, not only still grieves over his wife’s death, but carries a ton of emotional baggage from his own fatherless childhood. And, then, there’s Charlie’s “plan” to be the best Dad ever by providing for his young son in the only way he feels is right…by working. It’s a definite “Catch 22” for Charlie who must learn to let go of what he must achieve in the future and, instead, experience life in the present. Both warm and heartfelt, this novel offers profound wisdom about how being a good parent requires growing up, accepting heartbreaking challenges, and being the best person any child could want as a Dad.
